Message If you want to extract the full potential out of a WI setup, yes a custom tune will be required. I've found two schools of thought on WI tuning.

First, don't tune the ecu for WI and use WI as a safety buffer. So if the WI cuts out, or doesn't deliver the correct amount of water, no problems with the engine. This involves usually just turning up the boost. Check Devilz's posts on the snow performance kit, he has some dynos with WI and increased boost levels.

Second, is the tune for WI/ max performance. Change timing and fuel maps to account for WI. More horsepower less safety. How much less safety depends on your exact setup and how much you want to spend. You can get electronic failsafes in place to notify the driver/tuner of problems.

You hear people mention more power at lower boost with WI, which is primarily due to two reasons. The WI system cools the incoming air (cooler air is denser air which has more oxygen for combustion) as well as cools the cylinder during combustion. Energy is absorbed by any remaining liquid water as it changes to vapor.

Hope this helps.
